dont know i was not in at the time but my wife said it made a couple of popping sounds then a flash and a bang i took out the psu out and it smelled of burning

That definitely sounds like the PSU died a violent death.

Please provide your system specs and the model # / part # for the PSU. How old is the system? Still under warranty? Some of the older Dell systems used propietary wiring in their PSUs, but I'm not sure if Packard Bell was ever guilty of that...
