Yamaha, Sony or TDK?

I've got the choice between a Yamaha 16x10x40, a Sony 12x8x32 or a TDK12x10x32. The Yamaha and TDK are both $249, but the TDK has a $50 mail-in rebate. The Sony is $179. Which one is the most reliable and which one is the fastest? Suggestions?

If I had to choose between a Yamaha, a Sony or a TDK, I would go for a Plextor...

Did you get it?

I am the owner of a Plextor.

Why don't you read any of the other threads in this section?

The drives you mentioned are decent, but Plextor is still in the top.

While I agree Plextor is the best, it's just not an option for me. So I'm trying to decide between these and cannot find a comparison anywhere. :/

I'd say either the Yamaha or the Sony.

Actually, the TDK is a rebadged Plextor and it works VERY well for me. The included software (mainly Nero 5) is pretty good too. As for a comparison Maximum PC magazine just did a CDRW comparison in their Jan 01 issue. The TDK won BTW even over a Plextor 12x10x32.

The glass isn't half empty, it isn't half full. There just isn't enough in it.

I COULD mail-order from someplace on the internet. But I wanted to spend under $250. The TDK is $199 after the rebate (so about $250 before). Most places I've seen the Plextor advertised at are about $300. Or else I'm inclined to question their reputability. Also it's kind of time-sensitive. I have some important documents I need to back-up (and I've seen some Zip drives of mine fail recently). So, I decided to go for the CD-backup theory. :) Plextor is a very nice drive, no question about it. And, when I get the money, I'll make it a point to build my good, solid, redundant server complete with Plextor drives. For now though, I've got to settle for less than the best. :(

From what others have said, the TDK is a good second-choice. So I'm happy with it now. Thanks for all the help!!

I don't know why everyone hoots over the plextor when the TDK does the same thing at the same speed and is $50-$100 less!!! It has burn proof. It has 32x DAE. It is fully supported by clone cd. I don't know what more you can ask for.

DO NOT GET THE YAMAHA. I have the 16x Yamaha and so does a friend of mine. For him it has worked just fine for me it was crap. Upset after the continual buffer underruns (from an 8 meg buffer!!!) I decided to take it back. The next one I got did the same thing and it doesn't matter what speed I burn at or what program I use. The only way I can get successful burns is to turn on DMA which helps but it still is not very reliable. Yamaha usually makes great CD writers but this one is definitely not the best. Go for the TDK it was rated really high, if you are really interested in quality though Plextor is the best. As a side note the Ricoh CDRW/DVD is rated really high and said to be extremely reliable, might not be a bad choice.
