Hi, I was wondering how easy it would be for me to upgrade CPU's 2-3 years down the line if I buy a chip with LGA 1155 socket right now? Is this a pretty common chip socket right now, or will it be too limiting in a few years?

Solution
Socket 1155 CPUs will be produced until just prior to Intel's release of Haswell which is expected to be released in mid 2013.

Depending on just how much stock of socket 1155 CPUs are inventory around the US or whichever country you are in, it would be generally safe to upgrade into the beginning of 2014 up thru mid 2014. Of course it would smart to keep an eye out for any news or rumors that socket 1155 inventories are drying up.

Current SB processors will probably be the last lineup for LGA 1155, with the possiblities of maybe a speed bump or two. The new hotness will be Ivy Bridge, which will be yet another new socket architecture. If you want to upgrade in 2-3 years, expect to upgrade you mainboard as well.

Completely wrong. Ivy Bridge will be on Socket LGA 1155. LGA 1155 will be seeing new CPUs into 2013 so it's a safe upgrade. Just make the motherboard you choose is compatible with Ivy Bridge because not all of them are.

both 1155 and 2011 socket boards will be around for the next couple years. 1155 for the lower end, 2011 for the higher end and "extreme edition" chips. so depending on how much you want to upgrade, keep in mind the higher end chips for both SB and IB will not be on a 1155 socket, only 2011. if you just want to be able to upgrade with mid-grade chips then 1155 is a safe bet.

just depends on how much performance you're looking for in the end ;)

Ivybridge-e might be on socket 2011, otherwise ivybridge will be on 1155.
