Hello all :)

My Video card EVGA 9800gtx+ SSC died last week so I am going to upgrade my system.

Initially, I was going to place my order online from memory express or direct canada (hence I live in Canada).

However, a local gaming store in my area builds custom gaming PC's... So, he offered the following:

CPU: i5 2500k = 245 canadian dollars
RAM: Kingston hyper X 8 GB = 80 canadian dollars
GPU: MSI 560 gtx ti hawk OC = 290 canadian dollars
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68 V LE = 160 canadian dollars.

Assembling and dissembling fees for the parts = 65 canadian dollars

TOTAL: 950 dollars!!!

Also, he offered to sell the old parts of mine (if I buy from him) and if they do sell, then he would charge 20% of their price.
So, let's say a part sells for 100... I get 80 and he gets 20
Old parts are E8500 dual core, EVGA 750 sli ftw, 4 gb ram crosair and EVGA 9800gtx+ SSC

Notice that I do have a case, hard drive, power supply... etc...

Now I am kind of lost... place my order online or go with the local store?

THANKS in advance and SORRY for the long post

A. avoid him like the the black death.
B. If you have Craigslist in Canada(or similar site) use it to sell your old stuff.
Can you not buy from Newegg.ca? It has that video card on it for 270 with a mail in rebate

Also why do you need all that new stuff if your Video card was the only thing that broke?

What do you have right now, and what do you use it for?

Avoid him... That's why I am skeptical about him...

I think we do have such website in Canada yes!

I can! Actually, memory express and direct canada total cost for those parts mentioned (comparison purposes) = 750 canadian dollars
However, I've never ever assembled a PC before and almost all local stores in here won't assemble people's parts that are bought online... Interesting indeed but understandable I guess :s

Well, I've had my gaming rig for 3 years now and I guess it's the time to upgrade since the video card (you know might as well do it now than later) ;)

Ty for reply By the way

Place your order online as it seems he has bad prices. Also it seems as if you should start a new build- I recently spent months upgrading my age old pentium 4 machine and of my 200 dollar upgrads did not work. If you take my advice and build you should get the folowing:

i5 2500k 219 CAD

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3-B3 150 CAD

Corsair Vengence 8gb 60 CAD

ASUS GTX 560ti Direct Cu II 230 CAD

New Hdd about 65 CAD

Windows 7 Home premium *if you don't already have it* 100 CAD

And you're good to go.

If I were you I'd save the money and build it yourself.

It's very easy to do and there's plenty of instructions online. In fact there's even instructions that come with every part that you buy. It's easier than it looks and can be satisfying.

Think of the extra $200. That's four good games or a better graphics card.

What power supply do you have? You might need the extra cash there.

Building a PC is lemon squeezy. Any number of tech sites will give you all the info you need. I can understand your reservation doing something like this for the first time but I assure you it is NOT hard at all. BUT more important then where to buy it from is the "what are you using it for". While Nigels suggestion is fine, you might not need that much of a PC. i3 or a X4 would probably fill your needs. Tell me what you intend to use the PC for and I'll suggest a good build.(IMHO)

CPU + Motherboard COMBO: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-BDL_2500K_Z68XPUD3%28ME%29.aspx

I've been a PC gamer since 1999 ^_^ I am good with IT stuff but not with Computer Science Stuff (so my weakness is obviously assembling PC's hehe). However, since you guys pointed out that it's easy... I might consider it!!!

Thanks again. I did my research very well I guess but going to that local store today made me feel like in a land on no where >.<

By the way, just one more picky question... The current graphic card that I chose or the MSI 560 gtx ti HAWK?

Or you could buy an i3 and mobo or even a PII and buy a 580 or a 6970 with the extra money. If you are just using it for gaming both of those setups will be MORE then enough for CPU power and the extra video performance is really what counts in gaming.

Indeed. I have to agree with you here but I just don't like spending more than 300 dollars for a video card whether it is 2008, now or even 2020 :D that's just me I guess

By the way, any last words regarding the video card? whether choosing to buy the EVGA DS or the MSI HAWK?

Thanks again
