Probably because his phone is hidden, that is, not set to be "discoverable"
when other BT devices search. No doubt you can set your Mot to be the same.

OI MATE,i sorted it out, wot you sed wasnt the problem. Wot it was is that the first time you use bluetooth on v550 and similar phones, you have to turn the bluetooth on (even if it is already on as in my case) and then follow the example below:
1) to send a picture, go to the picture menu,
2) go to copy
3) click 'look for devices' or equivalent
4) if any bluetooth phones are in the vicinity then they will be picked up
i hope some people benefit from this. if ya'll have any questions then please reply to this.

What I said is still valid for most BT devices: if they ain't set to be
"discoverable" (or whatever word is used to describe being hidden/unhidden
like "visibility" ), no other BT device will see them unless they've been
paired at some point such as headsets. So it sounds like your phone was set
to be visible (often the default) but his wasn't. Therefore, your last point
(4) is only partially correct.
