Forgot Heatsink?

Got a new CPU, didn't realize it doesn't come with a heatsink.

Still have my old AMD 64bit Athlon heatsink and fan....will that work well enough for a Phenom II x4? for a few days at least?

It should work but the main thing is to make sure it covers the CPU die completely and it locks properly. You want a good tight fit or it won't cool the CPU temps.

I got the arctic silver 5...I just wasn't paying attention to my purchase to realize it didn't come with a heatsink.

Edit: Would Best Buy/Radio Shack have any good coolers on hand at their stores?

Artic silver would work fine. You can check your local store but I'm not sure if Best Buy, Radio Shack or Staples sell cheap aftermarket coolers like the Hyper 212 or Evo.

I would just use what you have (if it fits) and then get a good aftermarket cooler like the Hyper 212, EVO or one of these two.

At 7.8 inches wide I don't think the Hyper 212 will fit. You might have to go with something smaller with a 92mm fan. Something like these two.

They're kind of expensive but yor're getting a pretty good aftermarket cooler especially with the Noctua.

What is your exact processor and model number? Also what socket type AM2,AM2+ or AM3?

My plan is to overclock the piss out of it, I was going to just run it (break it in.) for a month or so..then start buying my cooling, and proceed to overclock.

Seems like I'll be buying my heatsink a little early.

Edit: So for now, as long as my heatsink bracket will fit, I can temporarily use my AMD 64 Heatsink?

Try the Athelon heatsink first and let us know how it goes before you do anything else.

That's what I was trying to get at. If it was for an AM3 processor than it should work if not it might not work.

I just bought an AM3 processor, the Heatsink is for a AM2 Athlon 64 x2 4200+


Going for a "smarter" set up with my new build

paired with this MB

ASUS M4A87T AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard

You're going to have to try it and see. They are two different sockets so the AM2 heatsink might not fit on the AM3 CPU socket.

With that MB, which heatsink would fit? A performance cooler; that is. The links you posted previously didn't work.

I've been looking at the 212's. Would either have a issue with clearance if I was to add a second fan for a push/pull effect?

The Hyper 212 is a good cooler but it's one down side is it's sze. With 120mm fan it's pretty tall. That case is only 7.25 inches wide and I don't know if it will be wide enough for the Hyper 212. If it does fit it will be a tight fit.

It looks like the 200mm side fan might not allow a full size 120mm CPU cooler.
lets see if if we can find a review that confirms a fit problem.
