ST250DM000 would be my 1st choice.
16MB cache and SATA III
vs 8MB cache and SATA II for the ST3250318AS

The (ST250DM000) is a newer model with a 16mb cache and SATA 6.0Gb/s .
Hope you're not paying $80 for that.
You can get 500GB units for $80.

Actual performance? Probably close enough to identical that only a HDD / storage benchmark test could tell the difference.

Definitely the ST250DM000. It's a newer model than the other one.

ST250DM000 has one disk and read/write head(specifications):

ST3250318AS has two disks and three read/write heads(specifications):
http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/da [...] 200_10.pdf

More disks and read/write heads are worse. That means density is lower thus it's slower, uses more power per GB, it's less reliable, and it's heavier.
