I am looking into building a middle of the road gaming rig but I'm currently stuck at a crossroad. My last build (about 5 years old) worked with no problems until I tried to put that Star Wars game into and it literally shut my computer off. AMD has been good to me so far but it looks like Intel is on the way back. So if you had to choose between these two which would be better to start off with.
Do not get the 2600K for gaming, its a waste of money. As amuffin said, get the i5-2500K instead.
I hear you on the whole pricing thing but the chip is on special at Microcenter for $279. One of my good friends is talking this chip up because of the HT.
I plan to have this rig for some time, so i want to build it to last even though the parts will be outdated in six months most likely.
You get 50 dollars off of a mobo, I would get the asrock p67 extreme 4 gen 3 with the cpu.
So you don't have to use that mobo that they are suggesting? This will be my first purchase from Micro. Have you shopped there before and are they are reputable store. I usually buy from fry's is why I'm asking. I did some research on the I5 2500K and there are many people who say this board is awesome. Currently I'm running AMD Athlon X2 4400 2.2 on a Abit KN8 Sli board, which was ok when I built it but showing its age now
Actually the hackintosh build in my sig was purchased from microcenter. I am assuming you are around that frys and microcenter by the costco anyways it is a great place. However I would get the board in my sig over the v-lx.
I ended up getting that board that you mentioned, it came at a great price at Microcenter as well. That place is pretty sick for a computer store, I did get kind of pissed off that they ran out of HAF 912 so I had to get some other case but its cool. I went with the I5 2500k paired with the Gigabyte, 8 gigs of ram. Cx500 power supply and a Antec kuhler 620 cooling system. My last question for you is how much will I be able to overclock with this system?
