Hi, I am somewhat of a noob who built his first gaming rig about 9 months ago and I was starting to wonder about an upgrade. I wanted to get an opinion from the more seasoned rig builders on what would be a better investment for a gaming rig. How about an i7 990X or an SSD? Should I even bother upgrading anything?

My rig specs are below and any input would be appreciated. Thank you!!!

Systems Specs:

Case: HAF 922
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth X58 (LGA 1366)
CPU: i7 950 (3.06 Ghz)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 12GB DDR3 – 1600
GPU: EVGA GTX 580
HDD: Seagate Barracuda XT (7200 / 64MB)
Optical: Sony generic DVD
PSU: Corsair HX 850W
Screen Res: 1920x1080

Don't drop $1K on a CPU when a $300 one will outperform it, it'd be very stupid to get the 990X at this point.

Instead go for the SSD, that's where you'll see the most improvements.

Also look at adding a cooler if you don't have one.

And if you don't have one I'd also suggest adding a Blu-Ray burner - for $70 you could get the stock LG one or for $140 you could get the top of the line Plextor B950.

For the price of the 990X, you can get a decent SSD, upgrade your cooler, overclock the 950 way more, take out your girlfriend, and still have money left for gas for the rest of the year and more.

If you really wanted a cpu upgrade go for a 2500k or wait for sandy bridge-e. Your 950 is more than adequate for anything coming out for a while though.

Ha ha … too funny! Thanks for the advice. I wasn’t sure if there really was any difference between an i7 950 and 990X but now I know.

Guess I’ll start looking at SSDs and a nice place to take my girlfriend out for dinner.
