Hello,My Monitor has a DVI socket. My new PC with Nvidia card has both DVI & HDMI sockets. Would it be better to buy a DVI to DVI cable, or use an existing HDMI cable with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter at the monitor end?

You would be better to go DVI to DVI you will get the same resolution as the HDMI . The only reason you would try to use HDMI is if you want to get sound to speakers on the monitor. The other thing you want to chech out is if your monitor supports dual link DVI then you would buy a DVI cable with dual link connectors. The main difference with dual link is when you look at the connector end you will see that there are more pins on the dual link one and the regular one looks like there are pins missing and there are.

just use the dvi cable, there is no picture quality difference between the two,the only difference is that HDMI carries an audio signal but the dvi connection does not and anyway an hdmi to dvi wont carry audio either....so it doesnt make any difference

Digital DVI does support audio, analog DVI does not. "HDMI audio support

Since 2008, PC manufacturers have gradually upgraded the PC's controller to support HDMI-output in addition to DVI. Due to electrical and pin compatibility between the DVI and HDMI, only a simple passive adapter (or DVI-D to HDMI cable) is necessary in order for the PC to output HDMI to a compatible HDMI-display (such as a television), and take advantage of HDMI features (such as audio output.)"

Edit; You needn't buy anything as long as your DVI adapter is digital. read link.
