Hi all,

One of my friends is looking for a new computer and monitor, and his budget is $850. And since the majority of my knowledge lies in the area of high quality expensive parts, I dont know much about whats good for a really low price. The computer will have to be prebuilt. The monitor doesnt have to be included with the desktop, but it will still have to be added in there. Also, make sure if you find a site with something on there that it ships to canada. Ex: Newegg.ca instead of newegg.com or amazon.ca instead of amazon.com. Those are usually the most popular sites. Anyways, to the purposes. To hold music software, video software, audio editing software, all my songs (compositions), music for wmp, surfing web, screen recorders, audio recorders, word programs. So preferably a bigger hard drive, 500GB-1TB. Early responses would be appreciated. Thanks!

"...To hold music software, video software, audio editing software, all my songs (compositions), music for wmp, surfing web, screen recorders, audio recorders, word programs. .."

No stress on either CPU or Video.

A simple I3-2100 based laptop with a large drive would handle it.

For desktop, a good 23" monitor is under $200 ($160 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...) .

An i3-2100 based desktop system is under $500 from any major vendor.

Here is a set from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E...
(If the link doesn't work I just when into desktop competers, clicked intel i3 as the processor and sorted by price. You want the new i3-21XX processors, not older i3 with 3 digit numbers.)

I generally don't buy new prebuilt pcs, however I've gotten a few HP refurbs and they were solid. Here is an under $500 HP desktop: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto.do

Components

• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium [64-bit]
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 dual-core processor [3.3GHz, 3MB cache]
• 4GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [2 DIMMs]
• FREE UPGRADE to 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 500GB

Here's the equivalent refurb at auction: https://www.ubid.com/HP_Pavilion_p7-1070t_Intel_Core_i3...

HP Pavilion p7-1070t Intel Core i3 2100 3.1GHz 4GB 1TB w/ nVidia GeForce GT420 2GB, currently at $200, the auction will close between $300 and $400, but you are on your own after a short support period.

You might do much better waiting for BLACK FRIDAY sales and getting a laptop or server from newegg or a big bix store.
