Need some Peace and Quiet (loud computer)

Hey everyone. Last year I built this computer:
Coolermaster Elite 335
Biostar AM3 MB
AMD AM3 Athlon II x4 640(3.0 GHz) with the Stock Heatsink/Fan
Blu-Ray Burner
550 Watt PSU (cheapo)
MSI GTS 450 GDDR5 128bit

Even when the computer is just idling its loud and when gaming it gets a bit louder. The noisiest part of my computer I think is the CPU Fan. What do you guys think? What do you think I could do to change that.

  1. Put in a new cpu heatsink/fan. As the fans get older, sometimes they get louder.

Definitely replace the HSF! It is likely much louder than the PSU. A great performance to dollar HSF right now is the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ EVO for $35

If you think that the PSU is a culprit, then you can buy a quality PSU with extra voltage...PSU fans never have to spin up from heat associated with heavy load on the PSU. This will also give you extra room for future upgrades. Seasonic has a great deal on their S12II 620W $59.50 after discount and that's cheaper than the S12II 520W that I bought this weekend.
  3. If your case fans are loud, then these are awesome replacement options: Yate Loon D12SL-12. 4 of them for $20; Nexus 'Real Silent' versions of this fan cost $14 each.
They are PWM (variable speed) so to get the most out of them they need to be plugged into 4pin fan connectors on the mobo or to a fan controller.

Edit: Yes, I'm also a huge fan of peace and quiet...
