Does anyone have a good link, step-by-step on setting up DNS, which pictures and nice wording and stuff?
My boss just put in 6 servers with what he thinks is how DNS should be setup. I reconfigured one, but I want to break it to him nicely that, hey, you're not doing it right, here's a nice little website with the step by step instructions on it.

I'd go through and do the screen shots, but I'm lazy. I know how to do it, he doesn't. Besides, I'd rather have a website show him because he doesn't listen to anyone around him.. which is why the DNS and WINS he set up still doesn't work..heh

The MS site has good stuff relating to that :)

haha yeah. I was looking for something like "picture pages" though. haha
Win2k3 does a good job of automatically setting DNS up.. but for some reason he likes to install 2k server still. I figure if we get 2k3, let's put that to use and not worry about it.

2k3 makes server management a piece of cake. DNS isn't that much harder in 2k, you just actually have to go into the dns page to do it and not just run through the wizard :)
Just make a dns forward lookup zone and you should be good to go for most dns purposes. Just fill in the little stuff it asks for like your domain and such :)
Just like any other dns related thing it will take a LONG time to propagate. Once you make a zone give it a while to become fully usable. 2k handles dns changes MUCH faster than 2k3. Once you make a zone or a change to a zone on 2k3 (even when it is standalone) give it at least a few hours to propagate.

Tell that to my manager.. everytime he's created a zone, it's been wrong.. Besides that.. each DNS is on it's own domain, same subnet but different IP address ranges.. 10.11.x.x range.. I'm trying to get the DNS to do recursive queries to other servers but I'm getting stuck somewhere along that.. but then he sets up DNS, i get stuck going back through to set them up.
He sets DHCP to 72 days.. I probably could stop the service and restart to see if it'll register the connections.. I don't want to drop everyone in each location off the network since they'll all complain about it..

My biggest thing is figuring out how to get the recursive query to work on this network setup. Even getting a trust between two locations is coming across as a pain, even though they're easy to setup.
