Like xtremegamer2da-max, I'm a newb too. Or either too lazy to think for myself. Those damn Wattage is confusing anyways. How many Watts do I need for 2 HD 7970, i5 2500k, 1TB HDD, 64GB SSD, and 1 optical drive DVD RW, and Asrock Z68 Extreme 3.

I don't think newbs can fill this page out http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp to find the exact Wattage they need for their build. Is a Asrock Z68 Generation 3 a high end or regular mobo? It's only $121 at Newegg so I assume it's probably low end or regular?

For a system using two Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards in 2-way CrossFireX mode AMD specifies a minimum of an 750 Watt or greater power supply. The power supply should also have a combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 57 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin and two 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

If you're planning on overclocking the CPU and/or graphics cards then get a power supply with better than the minimum specifications listed above.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT a crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Total Continuous Amperage Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most important.

Consider something like the Corsair Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 (CMPSU-850TXV2). It has a +12 Volt continuous current rating of 70 Amps and has four (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors. It would be more than sufficient to handle your system configuration with some spare capacity to handle overclocking.

Keep in mind that the drivers will limit you to 4 GPUs, so you can only run two 7990s. Power usage between the 6790 and 7970 in real world apps isn't that different so I would assume that the 7990 will draw around 350W as well. 700W just for the GPUs, ~900W for the whole system, 1kW for a buffer. More if you want to OC things.

When I specify the +12 amperage I make sure that it is able to handle the running of Furmark or OCCT GPU stress testing because you have no idea what the user is actually going to run. Some users mention that they do run Furmark so it's better to be safe than sorry. I don't care about those that say that Furmark does not represent a typical maximum graphics load since they don't have any control over what applications the users run.

its a DUAL GPU CARD hence this will mean 2 cards max for quad crossfire. and no that psu wont handle more than 2 of them not that you can use more than 2 cards anyway, wont have enough plugs on it.

the 7990 when it arrives is a 2x 7970 3gb cards on 1 PCB, this means a 6gb card with 3gb or VRM memory for gaming and eyefinity. the price will be around 750gbp or 850euro/dollors when it arrives. the high end cards that will come overclocked as standard will be around 900/1000, but its better to get the 2nd gen 7970 in crossfire as it WILL scale better than a dual GPU 7990. its the way of the world and always will be.

ive seen it running 4 cards on a 1500w PSU or 2x 850 linked PSU's wont work with anything less that is for sure
