Massive CPU bottleneck?

So I bought a cheap Compaq CQ5300F desktop with a single core AMD Sempron LE-1300 2.3Ghz. I put a 500w PS and a GTX 550 ti in it. I tried running Counter Strike Source (from 2004) and I only got 55 FPS average. Definitely not what I was expecting, since my laptop with a 9600m GS and Core2 Duo 2.0Ghz gets 100 FPS average. Could it be the CPU bottlenecking it that much? Single core P4's used to play CS well...

My mobo only takes AM2+ 95W, so would a Phenom X4 9550 solve my problems? I want the FPS on this desktop to beat my laptop.

Thanks.

PS. I play at 1366 x 768 res.

Yeah the Sempron is a budget processor and yours only has 1 core.

Yup VetteDude is right. sempron is the equiv of a celeron. (1 core and minimal cache)

Check out your motherboard model and see what CPU's you can take.
look at either a high end Phenom X2 or a Phenom X4

NOTE: CS Source is a little old now and will only use 1-2 cores so a quad core may be wasted.

Hi :)

All the above are correct apart from one thing.....you wont get either an X2 or a quad to run on that laptop motherboard...even if you are capable of changing it....

All the best Brett :)

Hi,

your motherboard is The M2N68-LA (Narra5) motherboard. and supports up to 95W phenom II CPU's.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01...

They do not specify which models though, just that up to Phenom II quad core will work.

Bye

ps ONLY AM2+ cpu will work, so don't try a 1055t or 960t, I would look for a 720BE triple core (I had one and it rocked)

Did you read the thread? He said he's changing the desktop CPU because he wants the FPS to beat his laptop's.

Sadly, none of the AM2+ Phenom II X4 cpu's are 95W. It looks like the 720BE is AM3 socket. The 95W limit is why I have to look at 1st-gen Phenom's like the X4 9550 or even the Athlon X2 7750. Benchmarks for the 9550 blow away the 7750, but which would you guys recommend for Valve Source games?

Hi, yeah I corrected my earlier post.

Here is something to consider:
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/M2N68-LA_%28Narra3-G...

read the comments section, I know it is for a different revision of your motherboard :pt1cable:  but it illustrates that newer CPU's will work in some systems with a bios update, or show up as unknown CPU and still run fine. Buy a athlon II locally and if it doesn't boot return it, just make sure about their policy. :sol:
