So I have decided to sell my current ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ mobo and my AMD Phenom II 955BE after seeing how much of a letdown Bulldozer was for gaming and grab myself a 2500k setup. I do not know how much I'll get for the mobo and CPU, but I am going to spend out of pocket to to get the 2500K as well as good mobo. I can spend around $250 on the mobo like I did with the Crosshair V. $300 at the very most. I'm still trying to decide if I should crossfire my 6950 or sell it and get a more powerful single card from the 7000 series.

I appreciate any suggestions on either of the dilemmas and I hope you all have a good night.

If you have a 1080p monitor Bulldozer will game as well or better than a 2500K .

How is bulldozer better than i5 2500k? I mean sure, at stock, they're more or less the same in game, but when overclocked, i5 2500k>FX.

Conventional monitors run at 60 Hz . Thats 60 fps . Any time your gaming rig makes more than 60 fps its never going to appear on your screen .

The 2500k can produce massively higher fps at lower resolution than BD in OLDER games. That's not in dispute . Its a nonsense benchmark though because of the 60Hz monitor .
Here is BD vs the 2600k [and other processors] in BF3 at even moderate resolution
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-13.html
How is it an advantage to have a 2500 or 2600k?

When you get to higher resolutions then the graphics card is even more the determining factor .
And there are plenty of benchmarks that show BD fractionally ahead of the 2500k and/or the 2600K once you hit 1080p .

OCing is mostly bogus too on 2011 games . OC the processor gives you no or very little gain
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/automatic-overclock-motherboard-cpu,3048-11.html
The gain from OC is so small you'd never notice it .Even more so when the stock cpu is running faster than 60 FPS anyway . The major value of the K series skew is to Intel .....who have an excuse to not honour warranties because they know you cooked your processor by trying to run it at 5 GHz . The user gets NO benefit

EDIT : If I was building a high end gaming rig today it would be Z68 mb and a 2500k . But I wouldnt throw away a near new AM3+ rig to do that .
The BD X6 running at Fx 8150 speed looks just right

BF3 isn't the best threaded gaming when an i3 does better than an i5. Anyway, the OP is selling his current mobo and CPU so he can get an i5. If he wants an i5, he'll get an i5. I was just going by what the OP said. A mobo for an i5. I suppose CPU doesn't really matter in higher resolutions as long as it's not bottlenecking anything.

Giving a bunch of GPU-bound situations to compare CPU performance is really stupid. Overclocking my 2500k brought my FPS in SC2 from ~90 to ~120, and while it might not matter then, instead of dipping to 40 or 50 during huge fights, I now dip to 70 or 80.

Don't throw your opinion on overclocking around as if it was fact. An overclocked 2500k absolutely stomps Bulldozer.

And while it is true that several games are GPU bound, a 2500k will last a lot longer before you need to upgrade, allowing you to spend your money on better GPUs instead.

You would seem smarter if you had understood what I said .
Perhaps you should try reading it again .

Though ,even I have to admit a strong suspicion that wont help

As for your argument that a 2500K saves you money.... .not in the OP's case since he already owns the mb and graphics card . Hes have to spend a lot more to do as you suggest .
Perhaps you should read his post again too .
