New PC for the parents

I posted a thread like this several months ago, but things have changed since then and I was hoping I could get some help from you guys about building a new computer for my parents for a Christmas present.

The situation: Every time I go home, my parents computer is obnoxiously slow. My mom really only uses it to watch a couple videos and do some bill tracking etc. My dad doesn't do a whole lot with it either but I can't tell if that's because the computer can't handle anything else or because they don't want to use it for anything else.

My 2 brothers and I decided to build them a computer. I don't see my mom's computer usage changing much, but I can almost guarantee that my dad would not mind being able to play FPS games like CoD as a casual gamer.

My request: Help us pick the parts to build a computer for my parents, no monitor, keyboard, mouse or other things like that required. If we could get it below $300 and still have a decent computer that will allow my dad to play some of the newish FPS games at reasonable graphics settings, that would be ideal.

Keep in mind this would be a christmas present from them, so the buy date would be within a few weeks. Thanks so much for your help guys :)

I noticed that they are significantly more expensive now, what happened? I've been away from the computer scene for a while

EDIT: Just google searched about the flooding so nevermind, but anyone want to give it a try and see how cheap they can get?

I'm going assume your dad does not actually use the computer often enough that he will want a large storage drive, so you could always just leave out buying one (at the current prices) and use a hard drive you have possibly laying around.

Other than that, your budget is too low to build a decent computer - $300 for all the components - it's not realistic.

Why do you say that? And what would you recommend over it?
