Building a PC for the First Time -- is this a good build?

I've never built a PC in my life, but after spending an unconscionable amount of money for an HP Envy 17 and receiving a lemon that won't play Half Life 2, I have decided it's time to build one myself. I have some friends who will help me figure out how to put the parts together, but is this a build that will function? I'm a complete novice and am not sure how to buy the right parts, and the guides I've found online mostly seem out of date and difficult to follow. I want something that will play all current games on high to ultra settings.

More about building time good build
  1. Changed the case to:
COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 Black SECC/ ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
  2. What is the max amount of money you want to spend on this new rig?
Besides that I would change the motherboard to a Asrock Z68 they are much more versatile than the P67. Dont just got with a GTX 560 get the GTX 560 Ti or even an HD 6950.
  3. I would say upgrade the videocard to like the guy said 560TI ot 6950 2GB version. I would stick with the gigabyte simply because asrock tends to blow up in my face.
  4. Not including the monitor, I'd say $1200 max. Which 560TI is most reliable?
  5. This is a build I'm currently working on for myself with a couple of money saver options for you. My advice off the back take out the SSD and you will be under your mark and still have a badass system

  6. And before I bought my current computer, I would have stuck with AMD, but the Radeon 5850 on this computer has faulty cooling and HP won't service it, so this expensive laptop is worthless. So I'm going to stick with NVIDIA, despite the extra cost. Will the i5 be good enough to run most games on ultra, or should I spring for an i7?
  7. Stick with the i5 its better and not much different in gaming terms than the i7.
  8. Don't shoot yourself in the foot because HP screwed you over
  9. what case will fit USB for the mouse, keyboard, and speakers, and HDMI for the monitor?
