Hello

I am out of touch with todays intel cpus. Last year I was going to build a Sandy Bridge system in the early spring but a natural disaster hit where I live and I let those thoughts go. I did buy a GTX 570 to put into my old system.

Now it is about a year later and I am lost as to what is good to get for a gaming machine. I will play lots of games, use the computer for some band music recording and editing, some 3d stuff and 2 d animation making.

Is the 2500k still good for this or should I look at a different processor?

The Intel® Core™ i5-2500K is the best in a gaming system right now. The Intel Core i5-2550K has just been released and I am guessing will be very hard to find for a while yet. So for now I would look at the Intel Core i5-2500K and a good Z68 board.

WAIT!!!!, don't buy the i5 2500k yet!!, if u can wait 2 months more u could get the new i5 release codenamed ivybridge. and the ASUS p8z68 v pro/gen 3 will still be able to run it, so yes that is a perfect motherboard.

ivybridge:
-same price
-a bit better performance
-much better onboard graphics
