Hi all,
I have been a Nikon user since my first SLR an N70 (Film), I am a semi pro
photographer. My main body now is the Nikon F100. I am looking to make the
switch to digital. Not being digital is killing my business.

I have some Nikon pro glass, 24 2.8; 50 1.4; 60 2.8 Macro; 85 1.8; 80-200
2.8 S... I am prepared to eat it, as it where, and switch to Canon Digital.
So are there any Nikon users out there that have made the switch to Canon
and are happy for it, and would do it again? Hey, I switched to Mac, and now
could care less about M$.

I can't help but feel that with even the release of the D2X, Nikon is STILL
behind Canon, and the D2X didn't even get off the ground right. What are
your thoughts on this?

Am I going to burn switching to Canon, or am I really better off just riding
it out with Nikon. Going to Digital, Canon or Nikon, will be a major
investment for me. So I'd like thoughts on people who may have switched.

Are you looking at low end (D70 / Digital Rebel), high speed (D2H / 1D) or
high end (D2X / 1Ds)?

Given the price and performance of the D70, that might an obvious choice.

Selling your lenses now and switching to Canon may be a good idea if you
are not happy about the performance of Nikon glass.

For high-end, I doubt that much can be said in general. The performance
difference between the D2X and the 1Ds doesn't seem to be very big.

(But the D2X deserves a boycott because Nikon encrypts parts of the
raw files. In the sense, switching to Canon may be a good idea).

Rich,
If you want pro gear a second hand D1X can be had for $1500 or so as
can a Kodak DCS760. If you want more modern look at the Fuji S2 or S3
their 12mp is interpolated but looks very good. If you already have the
Nikon lenses, you have some good ones, I'd stick with Nikon. If you can
swing the D2x, it is a good camera. Just get a wide lens, the 12-24
Nikon has great reviews, or just a get a 14mm. Nikon isn't going away
soon. Hey I'm a Leica, Canon FD guy and I'm looking at Nikon. Most of
the cameras out now are very good, from the Drebel 350x and D70 to the
D2X and 1Ds.

Is the Canon raw format published by Canon?

There is difference between unpublished information and encrypted
information.

Especially given the recent legal copyright protection for encrypted data,
this is a very worrisome development.

If Nikon wants to be in the hardware business, they should simply publish
the raw format. We are not talking about a random consumer camera, this
is their flagship model. Encrypting data sends exactly the wrong signal.

Look at the Cameras individually and see if it does what you need from it.
Since the intro of the EOS system, Canon has stayed ahead if Nikon exept in
a few cases (e.g. when the F5 came out), but that does not mean you have to
jump ship. If that particular Nikon camera does what you need, what makes
the difference what Canon has? Both are major players in the dSLR field, you
should be fine staying with Nikon. You said "major investment" which seems
to indicate that replacing all that glass could be a bit painful.

I can't see how you would come to that conclusion. Nikon did what I hoped
they would for the middle-pro slot - they leapfrogged the competition, as
Canon did with the 1Ds MKII when it first came out. I'm hoping Canon will
now do the same with the MKIII, vive la competition, 'cause it's us
shooters that benefit when the camera makers have to compete hard.

That being said, the new low-end Nikons look pretty flaccid - at least as
an upgrade. The trouble being the units they replace are pretty good, but
they are only a bit better, so they are dissapointing as a new release.

Truthfully, I have no idea why you'd dump good glass to switch brands. I
shoot Canon and like them a lot, but the current differences aren't enough
that I can reccomend the many thousands of dollars premium (dumping old
lenses + replacements) you will be paying to play.

Just to clarify, I would be looking into the D2X, or the Canon 1D Mark II or
higher. I do shoot and use Contax 645AF for my wedding and portrait work. So
I want a digital to be equivalent or damn close to it.

A Digital Back is not an option. I do sports too, and like speed, so cameras
like the 14n or S2 / S3 are just too slow. I am not dissatisfied with my
Nikon glass other then the lack of IS / VR, but if I get the new 80-200 VR-S
I think I'd be happy.

Thanks for the input...
Rich

In that case, the only way is to try them both. The D2X has a higher
resolution than the 1D mk II, but a worse low light performance and a
lower frame rate. I don't know if there is a big different in dynamic range.

Depending on the film you use in the Contax, you may want the highest
resolution you can get. But I am not sure if either Nikon or Canon makes
portrait lenses that are as good as medium format lenses.

I switched 14 years ago when Nikon AF was so slow you might as well not use
it. Nikon's mount is old and they keep kludging more onto it and the
celebrated compatibility is more of a joke with every new body.
Start by trying Canon seriously - more than a peek through the viewfinder
at the local sales counter. Get a friend to let you try one for a day, or
leave your Nikon stuff as collateral at a store. If the Canon interface is
for you - switch, they are going to be far ahead in both lenses and bodies
for the foreseeable future. If you don't think you can change interface
(even the lens mounting is reversed) then figure you had best live with what
Nikon has to offer.
If you switch, start with the Canon body you need and just the one the
lens you use most often. Unless you still see real problems with the switch
you can sell off the Nikon gear for more lenses.
It took me a while to have the capability I had again, but I've never
regretted the decision for a moment.

If you can, go for the 1Ds Mk II (rather than the 1D MkII. Sure its a
bit more up front, but:
- its full frame AND
- it 16 MP - enough for almost any crop or enlargement you are likely to
do.

Is the D2X slightly better than the Canon 1D Mk II? Possibly, except in
noise.

BUT, the D2X is as good as it gets by Nikon. Almost a year after the
introduction of Canon's Mk II line comes the D2X and good as it is, it
still lags the 1Ds Mk II.

Where will Canon be in 2 Years? Likely far ahead of Nikon.

Hello Rich,

Looks like you will have to rewrite your web site a little. I would
stick with Nikon. Good luck...dave

I know of D30s used for weddings till not long ago. But no one
tryed to oversell what it could do, and went to higher res
of MF when it was needed.

For studio, a 1Ds II is the way to go at the moment.
