I've been searching for a couple of months now on either to get an ati card or a gtx card for my gaming rig for BF3, and other new games.

My specs are:

Intel CPU i5 2500k @ 3.3ghz
4GB of Ram (I have 8GB until I get Windows 7)
MSI Motherboard
650w power supply ( can upgrade though).

Any thoughts on which card or cards to get, ati or gtx?

Thanks :)

Edit: My resolution is 1280x1040

Welcome,
Well, that quite a low res there. You don't mention a budget or what you currently have, so I'll suggest a midrange card that would take you up to 1080p when you upgrade the monitor. The HD 6850 is a good choice in the $150 range, It offers very good performance for a low price.

Oh sorry under 250-300$ is my budget. Would crossfire 6850 be worth it for new games, Skyrim, BF3, etc? Thank you!

get a single 6950 or gtx 560ti

6850 is a garbage solution imo bc of the microstuttering

I have a MSI Z68 board and went with MSI cards because they get along with each other rather well.

Just my thoughts.

UPGRADE YOU MONITOR.

seriously, why buy a top end cpu and vid card if you have a crappy old monitor to ruin your gaming?
who cares if you can max out any game when you cant see the detail due to a crap monitor.

Yoo, I'm not a serious gamer, I just like graphics, and playing games, but I'm not a Guinness world record dealer for graphics though. MY monitor is like 22" or something but I don't really care for now. Thank you though lol.

Since BF3 is not out until October 25th I would just hang out until its closer to see if AMD actually does releases the HD 7000 series by then. Could happen by then and if not just go grab a 6950 or gtx 560ti like others have said.

Im sorry to say that this will not happen, the 7000 series will likely come before the end of the year but not before or around the release of BF3

I'll probably get the GTX 560 ti MSi for now. I'm only 15 and in the summer I'll get my job, and with the money I make I'll get one or two of the top line either gtx or ati cards.

You don't know that but then neither do I. The HD 6870 came out on October 22 2010 so history is on my side. I'm just suggesting why pull the trigger now If the card is for BF3 if he can wait another month just to make sure.

I have and its always that way to keep from stifling sales. Typical AMD. It sounded like a reasonable thing to do so you aren't kicking yourself. Since your in an argumentative mood, my kitty is cuter. :)

My parents didnt buy expensive vid cards either, my dad used to bring leftover computers from work for me. One day he brought back a 486dx4 100mhz! that was a great day! a good upgrade from the 33mhz version lol. I think the vid card was a 1mb (yes thats Mega Bytes not Gigia Bytes) cirrus logic..........

Outstanding!

Now.

I use a Samsung Sync-master for gaming. It usually has to have a reaction time of 2ms or less and a adequate widescreen to run the game world with sufficient view.

You do want video cards that will run well in gaming. I have sunk 1200 dollars into the new MSI lightning extreme that I think 580's in SLI were absolutely nothing can break these cards for years.

I try to think in to the future by years, however games occasionally require a system to be either rebuilt with new hardware such as BFBC2 going from single to dual and finally quad core... (For example) or a totally new system to be built.

My spouse has tolerated my system building and gaming for over a decade. I cannot add up the thousands or tens of thousands I put into this stuff. I suppose it is better than smoking or drinking or other vices.

I fear there is a time coming where these fine things we enjoy today will become hard to come by. And that is why I build with the biggest, baddest hardware I can find, beg, steal, charge it and so on.

My parents have passed on, and even today I would not approve of some of the things I see in the TV video game section of walmart which collectively costs at least as much or if not more than my PC.
