CPU for Visual Studio 2008

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs CPU for Visual Studio 2008

Can someone please recommend me the cheapest CPU which can process the UI of Visual Studio 2008 responsively? At the moment, I have a P4 3GHz single core, which takes about 10 seconds to load Visual Studio and the UI has to catch-up with me.

Any dual core @ 2.5GHz is more than enough, 4-8GB or ram and quick hdd.

Agree on that currently I use this:

Office: Core 2 Duo E8500 4GB (3.2GB for x86 OS) normal HDD
Home: X6 1090T 8GB fully usable and SSD

The difference is on memory and HDD or SSD not in CPU.

I highly recommend you dont go with this, It would require you to buy another motherboard where as a dual core or even quad core would not.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I recommended the i3, I should have recommended a core2-duo or core2-quad and stuck with the original socket.

Its ok, You are forgiven for your error :D

IIRC, almost all the P4 single cores were Socket 468, while the P4D dual cores used Socket 775. Core 2 Duos COULD possibly run on Socket 775, but I doubt any mainboard that was running a P4 single core could run a Core 2 Quad. If you are looking at a Socket 468 mainboard, then you are at end of life for that mainboard and you will need to buy a new mainboard (and, most likely, memory) along with a new CPU to see any appreciable performance improvement.

First of all there is no such thing as a P4 Dual cores. Secondly all Core 2 Duos are socket 775

pentium Ds are often refered to as pentium 4 dual cores.

@Houndsteeth

there were 775 p4s

@ OP

you need to check what your mobo is but upgrading to a new system would probably be best as the p4s are getting really old and processors that fit your motherboard are nearly antique and are probably over prices for the performance even if you could get a better cpu to fit your motherboard.

Sorry, should have made this clear from the start, I will be building the system from scratch, and wanted to know the cheapest CPU I should get to give me lag from quick Visual Studio 2008 environment. In the original post, I typed 10 seconds startup time. This is incorrect, it actually takes about a minute. I was thinking of something else when I typed 10 seconds. I tried to edit it, but was not allowed. So I'm after a cheap CPU, which will give me a lag free (or very responsive VS2008) environment. It would be nice to have the loading time ov VS2008 reduced hugely too at minimal cost.

Please ignore above post:

I'm not too concerned about the compiling time, as long as the overall UI is fast. In the original post, I typed 10 seconds startup time. Some have suggested that the speed is more dependant on the HDD/SDD and/or RAM?

Will I need to start a new post to get details on recommended cheap HDD/SDD + RAM + CPU, or can I get an answer to that here?

You can start a new thread in the Systems forum, but I will say this here. To get a responsive environment means upgrading to a cpu that will also require a new motherboard.

Thanks, will start a new thread in the systems forum.
