I have an 20 gb hd, it took me around 5 hrs to defrag the hold hd. I usually defrag my hd before I go to sleep. The best time to defrag.

You do not say whether you are using the build in software to Windows 98 but they are slow. Norton's are much better and faster just remember to turn off the virus detection before defrag (speeddisk in Norton Utlities) or you will get restarts due to rewrites and that is a killer in getting the job done. I have a 30 gig with four partitions and I would assume less than a hour for defragmentation. The biggest partition is 18.5 gigs and takes about 20 minutes with about 10% fragmentation. Scandisk (Disk Doctor in Norton Utlities) takes maybe a couple of mintues if nothing is wrong with the partitions etc. Norton Anti Virus takes longer which is about 40 mintues now. Your best value is getting Norton System Works 2001 which is bundled with most of their products at a much cheaper pricing.

They have a Profession version and they add the program GHOST and this is a DOS program which will allow you to Image your drive onto another hard drive, Jaz, cd-rw, devices. I just bought this version and Ghost is great, I image to an 8.4 gig drive that I had and it takes like 25 mintues to image and 20 to restore with data about 5.5 gigs in size. Get this you can change your hard drive partition sizes before it restores the image. This program will also allow you to clone your drive to another hard drive, disk to disk. But you have to do this from DOS, but once you give it a try out you will find it is an very important program for complete system backups.

I've got 60GB but I never really time it when it defrags (i'm asleep). Although scandisk probably takes about 2-3 minutes.
