What does the motherboard computer battery do

what does the mother board battery do & would the computer stillbootup with a dead one

I think it is for the clock. The computer should boot up but the clock will be messed up.

it stores your bios settings and also maintains the system time when the machine is unplugged. your computer will continue to working with or without the battery but if it gets unplugged or lose power for more than a few seconds your time settings will be incorrect and your bios will reset to default.
