I just finished building my first rig last night, turned it on, got everything installed, and now I am getting very high cpu temps. Core temps at idle are around 50C and cpu temp was around 75/80C. Mobo and gpu temps were fine. Needless to say I turned it off to avoid heat damage. Any ideas as to what could be causing the heat issue?

The most likely answer is that you are using the stock HSF (heatsink/fan) and it isn't seated well. If open the case and are able to reach in and grab one of the twist clips on the stock HSF for and pull straight up that means that it was seated well and you didn't have contact. Check all four of the twist clips. I generally advise that you put the HSF on before you put the board in the case. This way you can check on the backside of the board to make sure that all the clips are in and locked down.
