Similar performance for the 970 (a little less) for $15 more. Remember the i3 can hyperthread, meaning it can run 4 processes at once. Also If you take out the RAM and Blu-ray drive from my build, it'll cost around the same price. HOWEVER if you do wish to go with an AMD build, you can go with the new AMD FX-4100, 4 core FX CPU, which is $5 less than the i3 AND if you order before 11/21/11 you can get it for $95, which IMO is a FANTASTIC DEAL.

New AMD (using similar parts):

The i3 is one of the best budget CPUs, which has hyperthreading technology, which allows it to run 4 threads (like a 4 core CPU). Since this isn't a gaming computer, you don't need any video card, the integrated graphics is more than enough for simple games such as farmville and the such.

Now the ram i got already woudl it work with that motherboard ok (Kingston Hyper X X1 Black Series 8GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) 240-Pin SDRAM Dual Channel )? Also i think i may get a SSD just so it boots ultra fast. I realize i havecd/dvd drive, and the ram if it work ok with that motherboard.

Also you dont like the AMD athlon x4 645? i3 is still better bang for buck?

As you can see, the i3, while having 2 less physical cores then the Athlon, performs significantly better. The i3 can also hyperthread to have 4 threads (meaning it acts like a 4 core CPU). Since you have a 1600Mhz RAM, I would not recommend the motherboard I said earlier, because it only supports 1333Mhz, although most higher RAM can be used but running at lower speeds. As for the Disk Reader, I put a blu-ray drive, which allows it to play blu-ray videos. Only buy that if you or your girlfriend watches blu-ray videos.

You'll not be able to fit in a SSD on a 500 dollar budget. Basically, it'll save you ~30 seconds of boot time. Is it worth the money? You be the judge.

The above build looks pretty alright to me, but if you want an AMD build - as you say you do - here it is:

CPU: $140 AMD Phenom II X4 970 - Much faster than the 645 for just a few bucks extra.

Mobo: $45 GIGABYTE GA-M68MT-S2 AM3+ - Used the Rev 1.0 AM3 version of this one in my cousins' build earlier in the year with the Athlon IIX4 640. This is the Rev 3.1 AM3+ version - Hence more upgrade friendly.

RAM: You already have some :)

HDD: $100 HITACHI 500GB 7200 RPM (K1ng's link). The prices have gone through the roof in the last few weeks. You could have gotten a 1TB one for $60 a few weeks back.

ODD: $20 SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner SATA with LightScribe Support - OEM

PSU: $35 CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2

Case: $50 COOLER MASTER Elite 430 - This case was $40 till yesterday. Seems like demand has pushed the price up. Get the Blackbone in K1ng's link to save 10 bucks, or this one if you want a sexier case with the plexiglass side window.

Total: $390+ shipping after rebates.

Pretty much as strong as the Intel build. Quad-Core for cheaper. Also, better upgrade options with the board to newer AMD chips in the coming years.

P.S: You can mix and match components from the 2 builds. Just make sure to check for compatibility :)

As for your questions:
1. I would say both are about same for multi-tasking, maybe the FX is better because it is using the 32nm process and has 4 physical cores, but if it is, it isn't big...it'll be barely noticeable.
2. Hyperthreading will be automatically enabled when you turn the computer on, I believe you can turn it off in the BIOS.
