The correct way to apply as5 to aftermarket cooler?

i got a amd phenom be. cpu and I am going to apply as5 thermal paste to it but i have cooler master hyper 212 plus cooler. What would be the best way to apply with those two components?
i read the downward pressure is better than spreading it yourself??
