$1500 Gaming build advice

Last response: in Systems
Share

Approx. Purchase Date - Sometime within 30-45 days

Budget Range: $1400-1500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming - BF3

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com

Country: U.S.A.

Parts Preferences: Would prefer full tower case for ease of assembly and future upgrades.

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: Yes, in the future.

Monitor Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Additional Comments: I'm looking to put something together that will last me at least 3-4 years (with upgrades, obviously). A tech friend has recommended an i7 processor for SLI/Crossfire and a single 6970 to start with. I may be overspending on the CPU and underspending on the GPU, but I figure that I can crossfire another 6970 in later if I need more oomph - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. Since HDD's are so expensive right now I'd like to just get a 128gb SSD as I won't be using this machine for data storage, it's pretty much just BF3. I would like to overclock the system. Here's the parts that I have now - hoping to get some feedback and see where I could improve the build. I'm willing to spend some extra $ now in order to have something I can keep longer. Thanks in advance!

Faster GPU: $490 EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 580

Better and cheaper PSU: $130 PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 950W

Overkill RAM for SB in your link. It will be downgraded to 1600 anyways. These will be more suitable - $45 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 1600Mhz

Cheaper (but almost equally feature filled) case (Do you really need a full tower?): $80 COOLER MASTER HAF 922

For cooling, either go with the H100 if you really want H2O or just get a cheaper but just 'bout as good Hyper 212+ for ~$25 odd.

Also, the 2600K for 320 odd will save you ~$50 odd as well if you want.

Cool, thank you for the feedback. Do you think the extra $140 for the GPU is worth it for the performance increase?

Also, I thought I would need a 1000w PSU if I want to go SLI/CF in the future - obviously don't need it for 1 card but I'd rather buy it now then get something now and have to buy another later. Will 950w be sufficient?

Is the ram really going to be downgraded to 1600? I thought that the mobo I had picked would run it at 1866.

Will the HAF 922 have room to (eventually) CF two 6970's with enough room to cool and run wires and pipes for liquid? I wasn't sure as to whether the H100 would be overkill with two giant fans...

As far as processor goes, I was told that the i7 had better crossfire/sli compatibility than the i5 and that was the main reason to go for it rather than the cheaper i5- is this true?

Yes, especially at higher resolutions. if you're gonna be gaming at 1600X900 or lower or indeed you don't wanna play at the highest settings, keep the 6970.

Will also depend on the games you play. Skyrim, SC, WoW, FIFA, NBA, MK etc. won't even require the 6970. The 6950/560ti will be plenty alright.

To crossfire the 6970 you won't even need a 950 watt unit. In fact even the 580 can be SLI'ed with a quality 850 watt unit (Source: Guru3d), but for a high end system, it's always advisable to get a bit of headroom to run a cooler temps overall, especially when running OC'ed CPU, RAM AND GPU so as not to over stress the PSU.

Yes, true for SB. You may run it OC'ed at 1866 by manually setting the speed in the BIOS maybe directly or by changing the FSB : DRAM ratio if your mobo supports it. Apparently, this Gigabyte board as you say, will support it.

I have no idea 'bout the 922. I know for sure that it's got a lot of satisfied customers all over. I recommended it because you seem to like the HAF's. I cannot see any reason for it not to support that build whatsoever.

I personally use the similarly priced Corsair 400R for my builds at this price range. I can vouch for that one and also the Antec 900, the one I used to use.

This is a Corsair 400R GTX 580 SLI build with the Corsair H100-

Depends on high high you wanna go with the overclock. As I said, for moderate clocks, even the 25 dollar Hyper 212+ should be pretty good. At the H-60 prices, you can get the Noctua NH-D14 HSF, if you want to avoid H2O.

i5-2500K is just about the perfect gaming CPU for a $1000-$1500 build. It will perform just 'bout as well as the 2600k. It will by no manner or means bottleneck a 580 SLI rig.

But at your price range, the 2600K since you can afford it, is the one to go with. Bragging rights never hurt, eh? :p

EDIT: I didn't recommend you an i5 originally. I had recommended a 50 dollar cheaper and 100Mhz slower i7 - 2600 instead of the 2700. The I5's are 23/24/2500(K).

Since you're OC'ing anyways, won't make any difference, unless you're looking to compete in some extreme OC'ing contest, where the better chip will come in handy to go up higher and absorb more voltage

Try a CORSAIR Professional Series HX850 for your PSU. A little more expensive but better and you only need like 800 watts for 6970 crossfire

No reason for the more expensive RAM. Try G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB

Also check out frostytech for better CPU Coolers. Corsair H-series are WAY overpriced for performance and noise. There are quieter better performing air coolers that are cheaper and easier to maintain.

Thank you for the comprehensive feedback!
I dropped the ram to 1600 mhz, dropped the CPU to the 2600k, switched to a NZXT case and went to a 3 gb 580 card. Much happier with what I'm spending now as far as upgrade paths go.
Looking forward to putting this together. Thanks again.
