Hey guys I'm trying to upgrade on the cheap side and was looking for AMD value versus mortgaging the farm on an intel 2500k. I was originally looking at a Phenom2 x4 970 but the bulldozer 4 cores are only like a 100 bucks. I will pair either with an am3+ mb and 8-16g ram.

Solution
I would go for I5 2500k or Phenom II X4 955/965/975 if you are short in cash. The FX 4100 is weaker than both in multiple professional reviews. FX 4100 is not a true Quad core CPU unlike the Phenom II X4 and the i5 2500k.

However, if going for a Phenom II X4 require you to step down on the graphics card significantly, then go for the FX 4100. Video card is number 1 priority when it comes to pc gaming.

You can get an AM3+ motherboard and can still upgrade to Piledriver next year if you are going for Phenom II X4 now, its compatible.

This is for a mostly gaming pc. I've got a decent case 500w antec ps, hd 6870 gpu, and 1440 x 900 monitor. Running an old E6750 running at 3.0ghz with 4g ram. old LGA775 platform I want to get into newer platform that can be upgraded later. Was looking at the phenom 2 x4 series. I was reading some articles that said 4100 may be decent oc processor for cheap.
Need cpu mb ram and hd w/win7 64.

I guarantee you would notice a huge performance increase.

Definitely go for the 4100, lots of people are hitting 4.6ghz with them and for $105 (newegg) what do you have to lose? Besides you'll have a motherboard that supports the 2nd Gen BD and Pile Driver.

This cpu is definitely the new i3 killer considering you can't overclock the i3 at all.

Most games with the exception of MMO's are gpu limited, meaning it doesn't matter what cpu you have if your using a single graphics card, the graphics card will be the bottleneck long before the cpu is.

Example BF3

It will never be possible to upgrade on an FM1 motherboard . The socket will be replaced early next year with new fusion processors based on the BD cores

As for 4100 vs Phenom 955 then this is interesting

Keep n mind the graphics card and quality settings are the limitations , but theres barely any reason to buy anything other than an FX 4100

so it makes sense to buy an i 5 2500k or a fx processor, based on the fact that an FX can be upgraded to piledriver?

makes no sense to get a8 unless it iis trinity next year and it new platform unless it is am3? so Bulldozer then upgrade to next gen, and or a 955/965/970 until pledriver comes?

This is coming from an AMD guy, I've been told by guys, and judging by benchmarks, I might believe it, that basically Intel's 2500k is your best bang for the buck, and basically beats anything that AMD has. Keep in mind, I've been using/building with AMD chips since 97. But I'm starting to think Intel is a better way to go than AMD.
