So here's the question, do i keep my overclocked 920 or do I purchase a 3390k? I primary game more than I video edit. I've heard that I wouldn't see a benefit unless I had a crossfire or sli setup if I switch to the 3390k.

Solution
If you have the Intel® Core™ i7-920 overclock it and stay with it for a while as a gaming processor. If you are looking to get an Intel Core i7-920 or the Intel Core i73930K as a gaming system? Then go with the Intel Core i5-2500K and get the best performance and value from your processor dollar.

to me it would be better to get another graphics card. 920 overclocked (say 4.2-5ghz )is still fast. and the way things are going you might be best to skip three or four Intel gen cpus and see what it like then.

to quote from:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i7-3960x-overclocking-efficiency,3133-13.html
"Given its complexity and target market, there's simply no way for the LGA 2011-based chips to compete against the fast, yet relatively lower-power LGA 1155-based models like Core i5-2500K and -i7-2600K."

"In the meantime, we'll eager await Intel's upcoming 22 nm-based Ivy Bridge chips, which promise to improve efficiency even further. "

btw, if your happy enough with your 920, why bother?

Have you already overclocked it? If not, definitely do that. Going from 2.66 to something like 3.5-3.8 should be attainable (even with C0) and will give you all the CPU you need for gaming with one or two GPUs until at least Haswell.

I also hear the 7970 can often overclock very well...

I video edit often but not enough that 10-20 seconds would be super significant. I've been at 3.6 and its been rock solid for the last 2 years. I was a little worried that my 920 would be bottleneck for my OC 7970...

Change the CPU only if you need a new one! Your CPU is a good one and you can max out every game with it if you have a good GPU! If it slows you down while editing videos and you can't work properly, then you may have to upgrade, but I don't think that with a such powerful, overclocked CPU you will have any video editing problems! Buy a new one when you can't edit anymore videos with the 920 or can't max out games! This is my opinion!

Im running 4.2 GHZ on my i7 920 D0 .

My friend had a similair rig and just upgraded to the 3930k which he has overclocked to 4.4ghz.

Gaming differnce = 0
Real world feel = 0
Benchmarks = large

We both run sli / tri sli rigs which supposedly would benefit .

Nope not really . Same performance.

Im holding back pal , friendly advice , I recommend you do the same.

Im itching for a processor upgrade but really still dont see the point .
