For desktop which processor is better core2duo or core i3

I am planning to buy a new pc and my main area of work involves working with eclipse ide and jee server for java ee applications development.
Please help me decide on whether to go in for a core i3 based pc or core 2 duo based pc. I have heared confusing opinions regarding which is better.

i3 is faster. It's a generation ahead of Core 2 Duo.

sandy bridge core i3 is better than core2duo.
it's newer cpu, supports latest motherboards, ram. more power efficient.

i3 and core 2 duo both have 2 cores
but but
i3 have ht which means it can process 4 threads but core duo can process 2 threads

one more thing i3 is based on advanced design of socket,cache so i3 is very much faster then the core 2 duo

Core2 is end of life, if you still have a Socket 775 platform and there is a cheap C2D available then it should be fine, that said a i3 build is very cheap anyways.
