Upon Clean-Installing WinXP, ...

.... I am now confronted with a small annoyance: Upon initial booting and/or
restarting, appearing on the screen are TWO WindowsXP Professional choices,
with the clock ticking down. I must press enter to boot into Windows. The
screen is similar to when one installs the emergency recovery console and
has a choice of booting into Windows or the R.C.

How do I rid myself of this screen so that Windows will boot into itself
automatically?

As always, thank you for your help.

On a serious side: I miss not seeing Koldbear here with his wonderful
insight and wit. This is not to take anything away from all the men and

and who generously give so freely of themselves for the betterment of us;
nevertheless, he is missed by this one computer-bumbling neophyte. <deep

Hi,

Click on Start/Run and enter MSCONFIG. Flip to the 'boot.ini' tab and click
on 'Chack all boot paths'. This will remove any mention of a invalid boot
path from the boot.ini file.

What you are seeing is the boot menu. This appears either when you install
recovery console, add safe mode start or install another copy of windows. If
you have non of these and do not wish to use the menu system then go to
Control panel and click on the System icon. In System properties click the
Advanced tab. Near the bottom of the window you will see a section marked
Startup and recovery. Click the Settings button. In the Settings window
under System startup you will see an option marked 'time to display list of
operating systems' a time of 30 seconds should be in the time box. Either
change the 30 second time to 0 (zero) or simply remove the tick from the
time to display list of operating systems option. Click OK. In the next
window click Apply followed by OK to exit.

Your help is deeply appreciated. And, my machine is now booting right into
Windows.

But, Is there some way, though, it can be "edited" out, just as "safe mode"
can be edited in?

And, I have no qualms about editing the registry, IF that's what it takes.

yes there is but you don't need to use the registry.

1/ Go to Control Panel
2/ Click the System icon
3/ In system properties window click Advanced tab
4/ Look towards the bottom of the Advanced window for a section marked
'Startup and recovery'
5/ Click the Settings button in this section
6/ In the Startup and recovery window look under the 'system startup
section' and click the Edit button
7/ This will open the boot ini file for editing in Notepad
8/ Edit the boot ini file so that it looks like this: Please note that you
should save a copy of the boot ini to a floppy before making any
alterations. If anything goes wrong and your pc doesn't boot after the
alterations you can always copy the origianl boot ini file back from the
floppy disk to the C: drive. If you are using XP Home then change the second
line of the boot ini file accordingly.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect


9/ After making the alterations go to File on the main notepad toolbar and
select Save to save the new boot ini file.
10/ Exit notepad, system properties and control panel and then reboot your
machine. You should boot straight into windows xp.
