Need help choosing dual GPU setup. 6950vs580vs590

Hello all. I am new to Tom's forums so a big hello to you all.
I am looking at purchasing a new system and am faced with some tough choices on the GPU set up.
The machine will be used for moderate gaming and as a bit of a work station running MAYA for 3D design an annimation, Adobe CS5, photoshop and in design.
Gaming wise I have not had a lot of options due to the age of the system I have been running but will be looking at 1st person shooters, Crysis, Far cry 2 etc
Processor is an i7 990X, 12GB 1333 ram.
Options for GPU set up are
Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6950 (i am leaning towards this)
or
Dual 1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580-SLI (unsure of this)
or
Should I look at
3GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 590
even in a dual set up?? That will blow the budget I think ;(

Hi, can you tell me why you want a dual card setup?
I always recommend buying the best single graphics card you can afford.
But if you really want 2 cards i would go for the 2 6950 no doubt.
2 580's and a 590 will be overkill for today's games and applications and not worth the money, hell even 2 6950's are overkill.
You can also look at 2 6850's great bang for buck that will more or less give you the same performance than a single 580

Okay at that resolution the 6950's will still be good enough, and don't forget that you can unlock the 6950 to a 6970.
