Hi all,
As noted above, I'm considering my first venture into a DIY system. I've tried to read through all the really helpful guides on this site and understand everything. So before I go and plop down around $1500, I just wanted some feedback. Also, if I do get everything through one vendor such as Newegg, would they alert me if there is any incompatibility issues? Anyways, here goes, and thanks for your time.

First - is this combo deal just easiest to buy or modify?
Storm Trooper Core i7-2700K/GTX 580 Gaming SuperCombo

Otherwise, this is what I pieced together. I'm not sure on the CPU and Video Card - if you needed to cut costs, which of the two options would you go with? Also, not 100% sure on cooling, so I listed a couple of options.

Because this is your first build, look at the following threads while you are waiting for your parts.
Build it yourself:

And although this primarily a troubleshooting thread, the first part contains a checklist that will catch most noob mistakes:

Once you have your parts, yuo can pretty much skip Part1 because it mostly deals with parts selection.

Thanks for the system listing. I did mean win7 64 bit - sorry that wasn't clear.
I haven't had time to read to much over the weekend. Will have to look at this more over the holiday.

I ran into an old friend who actually builds these and suggested the system below. I don't have brand/vendor links, but he recommended this as something in the $1600 range as well. I guess there has been some issues around some of the 2nd gen Intel CPUs from what we discussed?

GIGABYTE G1.Guerrilla X58 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-960 CPU
Corsair 12GB DDR3 RAM
1TB HDD
DVDRW
GeForce GTX 560 Ti
NZXT Phantom Case
Corsair 750W PSU

Thanks again for your help. I'll be busy reading and watching video's this weekend!

If you live near a microcenter, you can purchase the i5 - 2500k there for $180 and if you want, any z68 motherboard for $60 off.

My suggestions (first time builder myself):

Go with the 2500k. From what I've gathered, the difference between the 2500k and 2600k doesn't justify the cost and you won't see much of a benefit when gaming.

If you're going to spend $200+ on a motherboard, get a z68 board if only because it's the latest technology. Here's one I would recommend based on the recommendations of others here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] pro%20gen3

It's not necessary that you do that, however. There's plenty of quality boards for under $180 and even on down below $130. Check them out for yourself. The major differences between the the price points are usually onboard USB 3.0 (for a case with a USB 3.0 port up front), built-in Bluetooth, the number of USB ports and Sata connectors, PCIe3.0 slots/compatibility, accessories, and overclocking features. Mostly minor things. It's up to you to decide. Remember to read the reviews.

For gaming, anything over 8 GBs is overkill. Don't ask me why, I don't know those things . If you want more, though, I would buy a 16 gig set over the uneven 12.

Here's a pretty good set reasonably priced:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145347

You don't need a 910w power supply. 750w is great for a single GPU system, 850w if you want the option to SLI/Crossfire later on.

It doesn't get much faster than the gtx 580. If you're alright with the cost, go for it. If not, a 560ti is a perfectly decent card. You could also settle in the middle and buy a 570 (~$350).

For the case, go ahead and treat yourself. Find one you really like with dust filters, easy cable management, front USB 3.0, and plenty of space. This is the face of your system and you'll see it every day. For the money you're putting into this, get a cool one.

Would recommend the Hyper 212 Evo over the 212+ for only $10 more. Again, only from what I've read here.
