Upgrade for BF3 (no suprise there)

my basic system specs are 16gb ddr3, ssd C drive, and i7 860 on a p55MB

I am looking into upgrading my video cards as according to what ive read to max out BF3 i will need something like SLI GTX580's (im assuming a bit less than this)

I run a 5870 eyefinity right now, websites are selling these cards for 350-400 and i paid about 500 for it new. this is the 3rd time an ati card has staid so high in price. the first was when i got a X1800; when the 1900's went down to 100 bucks the 1800 was still over 300. i got a HD2900XTX, that is still over 300 today... i have a bad habit of buying radeons that just hit a wall.

anyway, I am debating on another 5870 witch i can get on ebay for 200-250 ish (maybe less) or upgrading to something else. the radeon 6870 is only 150 ish used and is a far newer (albeit a bit slower) card. just trying to work things out.

you should sell your 5870(about 200 bucks) and save money to get two 6950(they are pretty cheap on e bay).they will crack BF3 on max on 1080p.heres a suggestion-

or buy a second 5870 to crossfire it.your card is quiet good but a little bit "outdated".

performance wise the 5870 and 6950 seem to be damn near equal. hardware might be a bit changed, pretty sure the 6 series has better tessellation support. for that kind of upgrade i think id just get a 5870 as its only 20 bucks more than a 6950. hmmmm such a hard decision

i just had another idea.... i could buy a 5850 for about 100 bucks or less and crossfire that with my 5870. amd says its a supported and recommended configuration. in the past the slower card useto bog down the faster card, does this still happen? did amd change this? has anyone done this before? i have a full liquid cooling system, am not afraid to over clock or bios flash, and am trying to get BF3 ready to be maxed out with out spending much cash. i prefer to pool my cash and build new systems all at once rather than upgrading along the way.

Stick with it and wait for the next generation video cards. It's highly rumored that the BF3 gaming PC's use i7-990x and GTX 580 SLi / 6970 CF at all the gaming conventions and whatnot but the main thing to remember is they're trying to make the gameplay as smooth as possible and as high quality as possible so they can attract people and leave a good impression.

Hell the only people who should legitimately need to update is the people with gt2xx cards (like me) and HD4xxx cards. I have a feeling i'm going to be stuttering around in the 64 man conquest battles (drools) at 1080p.

You might not absolutely max it out but you sure as hell can have it on high settings with some eyecandy. You're absolutely fine. If you're not then... why hello battlefield 3... the new PC gaming benchmark...

when i cant run a game totaly maxed is when i build a new comp. mine is coming up on i guess almost 2 years now. i built it when the lucid hydra fuzion MB was released so how ever long ago that was. i cant squeeze any more of an over clock out of my cpu or ram but my gpu is currently stock so i should be able to boost that a tad. all the things to consider with comps :/

I don't get everyone writing these posts saying the game is going to require 1000 dollar video card set ups. The recommended GPU is the 6950 or 570, that should run the game maxed at at least 30 FPS at MAX settings or really close to it. I'm pretty sure SLI 580's are going to run the game at 100 FPS or more...not really necessary.

time will tell i suppose. the recommended requirements i saw was at gtx 460 not 570. in either case i plan to run a res of 5760X1080 when all is said and done but i wont have that setup for another 3 or 4 months so ill see how things go. im excited to see the new bulldozer and its performance to the current i7's

a single gtx 580 will no doubt play bf3 at max settings.
the "sli 580 gtx needed for bf3" is to be taken with a pinch of salt.

i agree with you bcoz BF3 is not poorly optimised as metro 2033.a single 580( a bit overclocked will do better)will crack thr game with almost 35+ fps in every situation. :ange:

i suppose im just worried ill run into a game i cant max out. BF BC2 runs at 120fps for me right now but that game is as old as my PC i think.

honestly we need another 'crysis' where GTX580 in SLI barely break 30FPS on max setting

oh stop shitting what do you mean barely 30+ i get 45+(in most critical conditions) in crysis and crysis warhead with a single 580 3 gb card :pt1cable:   :kaola:  .

heres a proof with 40-60 fps average using a single 580 -

The BF3 beta starts on the 27th mate, so just wait for the benchmarks. Or better still play the beta if you can.

I seriously doubt it will take 580s in SLI to max out.

lol. i'm not talking about card. i said we need a game that able to force GTX580 in SLI to crawl just to give us 30FPS. early this year many hoping that crytek will be able to do so with their crysis 2 but in the end crytek only launch the game with dx9 on release with dx11 patch coming 3 months later.

i was able to max out crysis about a month after its release. i was running 3 3870's if i remember correctly. the crossfire support was so bad that i was unable to play the game unless i ran it on only 1 card.

honestly i'm still holding my breath with BF3. i know there are lots people out there hoping their mid range card able to max out the game with acceptable frame rates. but i also know that people with high end hardware (especially those with SLI and Cross fire setup) hoping the game will make good use all the resource available for their system. but as always it will never satisfy everyone. when the game was quite easy on hardware people with ultra high end rig will moan (and might blaming console at that) but when the game hit those with mainstream hardware hard on performance they (people with mainstream hardware) will start the old mantra about " ooh, these game is poorly coded" :na:

btw BF 3 looking good to me even on alpha. the caspian border trailer really did amaze me :p

You mean GTX560ti or 6950 1GB , A 6950 does not equal a GTX570 not by quite a bit.
