Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to somehow connect older computers together, to allow them to "share" processing power, ram, and gpu power. I would use this for gaming. Thanks.
Really no it isn't possible for you to connect a couple older computers together to get the performance you need to run a game.
Most servers today use a dual processor set up which requires that you have a board that will support both processors. On top of that the software (game) would have to be multi-threaded and would have to be designed to take advantage of the multiple processors and all the cores/threads that they support. Right now most games won't even take advantage of more than 4 threads.
Everything will need to be redesigned from the ground up which includes a custom interface for both motherboards, custom chipset, motherboard drivers, and custom patch for Windows 7... and custom everything else that I did not mention.
Think of it this way: a GPU on PCIe2 uses 500MB/s per lane, and then 16 lanes for a total of 8GB/s throughput for your gaming pleasure. The fastest Ethernet available right now is 10 gigabit Ethernet, which will net you 1.2GB/s of throughput and would cost you the price of several gaming machines. What you are considering is not only not possible... it's simply impractical.
I don't currently have the computers.. My school is getting rid of computers with processors the speed of 2.4 ghz and 2 gbs of ram for 25 dollars. It was just an idea. I'm actually going to buy one to submerge it in mineral oil, like they did here. http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php
lol, awesome! I love the mineral oil thing Ive wanted to try that sense I was a little kid probably will do it when my own kid gets older, just for the fun of it.
