Hey, I would like to know which of these three options provides the best performance disregarding cost, size, and other factors.

1. Dual 1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580- SLI Enabled
2. Dual 2GB ATI Radeon™ HD 6950 - ATI CrossFireX™ Enabled
3. Tri-CrossFireX 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6950

Also, if option 3 is the best, is the extra performance worth the loss of a PCIe slot?

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
Depends on your screen size.

If you're using a triple monitor setup, go for three cards (it's recommended).

If it's one large screen, or one full HD or smaller screen, go for the 2 580's. No point of three here, except that they'll be much less micro-stuttering on a Crossfire setup. High end SLI configs have less stuttering than their corresponding xfire setups.

Check out the GPU charts on tom's, read that micro-stuttering article and check out SLI and Xfire scaling as well.
