Computer Freezing when gaming?

My computer freezes up and the on screen colours change a bit outlining things with colors, only when gaming on bfbc2 and left 4 dead 2. Whenever things get a big hectic my game will freeze requiring me to shutoff my computer. Recently the fan on the video card 8800gt has maxed itself out on spinning and even using programs live riva tuner i can't get the fan to slow down. I cleaned the card and computer just 3 days ago and now this problem is happening.

Any soloutions or what could be wrong. I'm picking a 6950 up tonight for upgrade reasons anyways but I'm wondering what i should do with this 8800gt?

You are describing the typical symptoms of a heat and/or power problem. What make/model of power supply (PSU) are you using? Going to the 6950 may not solve the problem if your PSU is the culprit.

also what is your full system specs, if you have a weak CPU, it's like you did nothing by grabbing the HD 6950, it will hold you back because of the CPU

I got a 500w PSU models inside the case but I know its a decent one. I've got a 750w for the 6950
