In your opinion what are the best server cpu's regarding price and power consumption. Power consumption is a huge deal for me Thanks!

Forgot to mention number of cores as it will be used as a render farm.

Both the low wattage Xeons and Opterons will meet your needs. What software environment do you plan on using? Also, what is your budget?

Will be running 3d max, mudbox, vray and maxwellrender.

I was checking prices of server material and they are a little prohibitive for now. Was crossing my mind to build a high end workstation with the max cores possible taking in account power consumption too.

I guess i'll just upgrade my i7 920 to an i7 980. Or just buy 2 thuban systems... "El cheapo" is my middle name

You are right, any true server config will be expensive to get max cores. Depending on your budget, there are several dual and quad CPU mobos available to max out your core count and your budget.

Another option would to use many cheaper rigs networked into a cluster. Basically harnessing multiple single and dual core rigs into your rendering farm.
