Laptop to cable modem

Hello,
i want to connect my laptop to a cable modem with a usb cord ,I have another computer connected to it via ethernet.Can i do this?

If you have one device already connected, you might need a router to handle more traffic. My Comcast modem only has one ethernet connection. I ran the connection to a router, which has six ethernet connections. Also, connecting via USB might slow down your internet, depending on your speed and bandwidth.
