I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials.
It updates often, it seems lightweight and it seems good at catching the few throjans I've come across without any false alerts.
The reviews seem pretty favourable for it too.

I would recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or avast.
If anyone says Mcafee, or norton, they have NO IT knowledge.

That being said, a combination is Avast and MalwareBytes if you want to stay within the free category.

If you can spend a little bit of money then I would go with Norton Internet Security 2013 + MalwareBytes.
