So my buddy came to me at work, told me his mobo went out on him and asked me to look into the problem. well i want to start off just inquiring if he could even upgrade it to begin with. He has an HP Pavilion Slimline s5120y. Also would it just be less costly to just buy a new pc or build one from the ground up? less stress? thank you for your help.

This board might work if you want to save your hp windows files: http://www.ascendtech.us/hp-compaq-nashm-gl8e-5188-6951-mboard_i_mb64hpc51886951.aspx?agent=pricewatch. compare the ports to your current backplate (also called i/o shield). Here's a non hp board that will need a new windows coa: http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/ALiveNF6G-VSTA/ ($29.99 at 3btech). Notice the board dimensions of 9.6 x 9.6 inches. You can measure your dead board to see how close this board is.
