Photography, graphics cards that are made for gaming aren't optomised for applications such as 3ds max. You are best off with what they call a "professional" graphics card; in truth, often the only difference is that these professional cards have different drivers, but the same actual hardware.

So my best advice to you is to research which consumer-gaming graphics cards can be hacked with drivers made for the professional cards because the pro cards cost alot more. I know that an AMD 4870 can be turned into a firepro or something like that with certain drivers, and it makes it like 10x faster for 3D apps like max.

^Find firepro card with the same spec as the Radeon card and flash it. Just make sure the Radeon card you get to flash it with is exactly the same spec as the reference card (which the firepro adhere strictly to).

Know how to save a bad bios flash before you attempt. If you are not confident, do not attempt!

And I would suggest you to go for Nvidia Quadro FX 580 or better, which will be better for your professional work, a professional card though, and no need to hack, because it will fit your budget for sure..!!

Check out these prices, you can go for higher ones if possible:

Actually, everyone has different perceptions about ATI vs nvidia.
I would suggest you nvidia Quadro FX cards, they are lot better than only quadro.
And about ATI, i haven't experienced them, because my school has all nvidia Quadro FX 3800 and higher. And they perform like hell.
And one more thing, quadro fx requires very less power input than gaming cards. So dont go for gaming hardware..!
