HDD not showing up in certain SATA ports

Hey guys, I've been having a bit of trouble. I'm trying to get my HDD in SATA port 1, but there must be some issues.
It turns on, acts like its going to boot to windows, and while its starting windows 8, the computer turns off. After rebooting,
the HDD is not recognized anywhere, not even in the BIOS. Afte switching to SATA port 3, it works fine. I need this HDD in port 1 for the HDD LED to start recognizing an HDD. Also, I plan to put and SSD in my comp and use this HDD as a secondary, but the first 2 SATA ports (1,2) on my computer do not seem to be working. The 4th SATA port on my computer is occupied by my dvd drive which works like a charm. Thanks for any help you can provide.
