I was suggested by a friend that i should buy an i3 system for watching movies (1080p)and surfing web , infact that is what i do 70% of the time.
I already own i7 2600k machine.
Should i follow his advice and get i3 , cause i plan to keep i7 2600k machine(for gaming) up n running for ~4.5 yrs more.
I run my pc 24*7.

(all i want to really ask is my i7 machine going to be affected by component aging if working 4.5 yrs, all the time.)

i7 2600k
Asus P8P67 Pro
Corsair 8gb XMS
Corsair HX850.

My toys,
Dragon rider 975be watercooled build
X4 B35 WoWbox (relegated to use as business pc and testbed)
Eeepc 1015 netbook/toolbox for out on calls
and HTC Desire Z for checking Toms whilst at my night job :p
plus about 5 older systems I've inherited from clients as part payment on new builds, p4, athlonx2 level

Other halfs:
Duplicate X4 B35 build,
Compaq 56q something laptop
older laptop, gathers dust now but used as external safe
and she also has a wii console and a HTC Sensation
and I have so many parts its not even funny, I should build a htpc for downstairs and maybe load up one of the older systems as a server,
I think your mates trying to persuade you to have the i3 as a htpc, but its up to you whether you need or want another pc in the house

1. Main pc for gaming, video transcoding, Adobe Creative Suite and storage (anything that needs a bit of grunt). i7 920 @4.1GHz, 2*560Ti, SSD, 3TB storage
2. HTPC connected to TV, Clarkdale Core i5
3. Dell XPS L702x, Core i7 2630, GT555m (main laptop)
4. Sony Vaio Z 1080p, Core i7, Arrandale Core i7. Don't really use this any more, plan to ebay
5. Macbook Air 11 inch, core 2 Duo, 4GB, 128GB SSD. Used as an ultra portable laptop
6. Macmini, used as iTunes server with Apple TV and iPhoto (why isn't there anything for Windows half as good as iPhoto?): 4GB, 1TB, OSx Lion Server
7. Lenovo Netbook, Atom. Horrible little thing. Bought as ultra portable, hated it, hence macbook air. Plan to ebay
8. HP Netbook, Atom. Equally horrible. Got it free with a mobile data contract. Plan to ebay.
9. Wife's computer: iMac 2008 24 inch, Core 2 Duo, 4GB
10. Daughter's computer used for gaming, school work and general use: Core i5 2400, 4GB, GTX 295
11. Daughter's laptop used for facebook, browsing and occasional schoolwork: Fujitsu 13 inch with Pentium (core 2 duo generation) processor
12. Son's desktop, used for school work and occasional gaming: HP All in 1, Core2Duo, 2.4 GHz, GT 9400M

That's it I think. Interesting thread, never really counted them before.

Three.

My gaming pc (i7-930, 2x Geforce 470)
My main laptop which I use for web browsing and movies (a low-end first-gen i5 and some crappy switchable graphics thing)
My secondary laptop which I bought to use while my main laptop was being repaired, and which my brother is currently borrowing (pentium dual core, Intel graphics)

well.. actually dissapoint me..
fx 8120@ 4.3 just a hair faster than my x6 1090t 3.8 ghz in blender rendering.

however, i've already buy it. and no point to return it to the computer store in my town..

LOL i feel i need more PC's reading this.

Mine - Gaming - unlocked 960t@3.8GHZ, 16gb DDR3, 550ti
Laptop - some crappy advent thing years old
HTPC - Bulldozer 4100 (crap, stock speed and cooler), 16GB DDR3, X3 1tb HDD, 550ti

Planning an upgrade on the gaming rig soon though decided to wait on the 600 cards though.

Wife - Laptop - Year old lenovo thing (has a real nice keyboard)
Tablet - Some FSL thing on Win 7 she brought from China actually decent as a browser and cost pennies.

Several.
Laptop: Macbook pro 15 inch
Gaming: Custom, Asus p8z68v pro, i7 2600k, SLi 560 ti, etc.
Gaming no. 2: AMD Phenom 2 980 BE(OC at 4.4) , SLi 560, Sabertooth 990fx etc.

Gonna upgrade gaming no. 1 to SLi 580's possibly, might start a new build altogether.

Cpu architecture. And how BD doesn't truely have "8-cores" rather than 4 bunched up bulldozer modules.

2 gaming computers (both homebuilt- first ever builds for me. Woot!)
1 retired dell desktop(waiting for the trash heap)
3 working laptops (all 2+ years old and barely good enough for internet browsing anymore)

Itching to build more. I'd love to do a HTPC.

I'd also love to do a laptop if there were standardized parts. I want a gaming laptop, but don't want to pay prebuilt gaming laptop money. Ah well...

Well have several dozen old computers to my new one.

Newest is a Sandy Bridge E 3960x with 2 7970 in crossfire mode.

Several 775 boards.

Several older Pentium 2/3/4 systems.

Of course my original Tandy 1000 SL(still works)

Still have a few working 80's computers.
