For winxp Eeepc 1001p: Put an sd card. Create an ntfs partition with "hp USB disk storage format tool" (a freeware available on the internet) and asign virtual space file of min 1,5 x ram, max 3xram only on the sd card. Be very careful not to format the internal disks of the eeepc. For internal disks 0mb of virtual space file. I did it an hour ago and it solved this problem. I can view youtube videos online on higher quality even on full screen. I am doing it right now.
For winVista and win7 there is a similiar system to "expand" ram, it is called ready boost. It should work.

For even more smooth playing of youtube video files move browser cache files to the sd card.

Here for Firefox:

Here for Internet Explorer:

For better performance of the whole netbook disable every graphic effect you can, the more it looks like w98, the better, don´t use background image, disable every programm you can at startup (msconfig).
Try to tune it the best you can. In may case with winxp I use a w98-pumpkin look with changed colours and personalized green background. What you want is a fast working machine, not a picture frame.

Also helps:
-EeeSuperHybrid engine, an Eeepc utility for overclocking while running Windows. I call it with Fn+Space bar, then I go to its icon on the taskbar (next to the time and antivirus), right mouse click and select Super Performance Mode.
-Configure programms not to open on windows startup. Ares, Messenger, Skype, ...should not start, use them on demand or close them.

-remove startup programms:

http://teamtutorials.com/windows-tutorials/remove-items-from-windows-xp-startup#.T8eoulJhunA

A utility for winxp to disable uneeeded services is the freeware Hijack This, use it with care.

-To disable visual effects (recommended):

http://www.xp-tips.com/disable-visual-effects.html

You can change the win98 theme, I use a changed pumpkin theme.

-For moving virtual memory to the sd card:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sysdm_advancd_perform_change_vmpagefile.mspx?mfr=true

I left virtual memory only on the sd card, Eeepc internal disks are too slow.

You can disable Windows services (with care):

Hide your Windows taskbar, you will have more space.

Do not use gadgets on vista and 7.

Tune your browser, erase every unneded bar, move browser cache to the sd card.

Stop every automatic update, do it by hand and on demand.

Tune by hand, do not use tuning programms, they open at startup and we don´t need them. Leave the Asus programms and the antivirus alone, they do should start .

The key of the Eeepc is tuning and using an sd card for virtual memory. If you tuned the right way and searched for the highest performance then you surely can enjoy this youtube movie:

Good luck
