Required RAM for gaming question

Ok, so I have 8GB of Kingston DDR3 1600 (at 1.65v) and I noticed that after bootup my pc has about 5.3GB free.

My questions (please answer all):

Is this enough for gaming?

When a game says in minimum system requirements "8GB" of RAM, does it mean, "8GB of FREE RAM"? or does it mean "Whatever is left free in your system, we are assuming it will about 5GB since Windows 7 + background applications takes about 3GB"?

So I am really asking, whether 5.3 GB (of actually free memory) is enough for gaming these days?
