Can\'t get speakers to work.

speakers were working. When unplugged, sound went through laptop internal speaker. Replugged in external Alltec speakers, computer still using internal speaker. Restarted computer, same result. Checked control panel, hardware and sound, clicked on external speakers, and... the heading disappeared! Now it is stuck on 'headphones' and I don't know how to get it back to recognizing speakers

I would start with a complete shutdown and remove the battery for 20 minutes. Then try to turn it on with the battery still out and ac unplugged. Now put the battery back in and boot up and see what happens.
