GA-X79S-UP5 Hangs with 64Gb

Greetings!

I need to learn something. I have the referenced MOBO with:
64 Gb of Crucial Ballistix (BLS8G3D1609ES2LX0.16FER)
i7-3930k CPU Stepping C2 (mobo is BIOS F3, so C2 is supported)
GT680 video card
Noctua NH14 cooler
128Gb SSD for C drive, 3Tb Seagate, and a DVD drive all wrapped up in a CoolerMaster HAX case with an 800w PSU.

Everything runs just fine with 56Gb (7 sticks) of ram installed. Memtest will run for as long as I let it with no fails - I've let it run 3 full passes across a half-day. I can swap memory sticks around with no issues, so I don't think I've got any bad slots on the board. Add the 8th stick of RAM and memtest fails almost immediately (and always in the first Gb - 4% done of test 0) and Win7 blue screens within a few minutes, faster if I actually try to do anything useful.

I have looked at various OC instructions and haven't found much useful as I'm trying simply to get to stable - I'm not a gamer and OC isn't in the cards long term. I am planning on quite a bit of video editing though, so 64Gb is a priority.

I have tried the following:
IMC voltage wants to run at .88, but I've boosted it to 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 with no change in behavior.
XMP profile 1 runs the ram at 1.35v and vtt 1.3
XMP profile 2 runs the ram at 1.5v and vtt 1.05
(XMP #5 in the tables below)

Below is the CPU-Z profile off the system (Windows stayed alive just long enough to copy it off).

So, what do I need to modify to get this rig stable? Advice, pointers, anything? (Once I get this one figured out, then maybe I can get my ASUS build working, but this one first!)

G.Skill F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL is certified to work with your motherboard, but Crucial don't list any 64GB kit for that motherboard. I suggest you contact Crucial or Gigabyte support because few people install 64GB of memory.

I managed to find 2 G.Skill F3-12800CL10Q2-32GBZL kits. Same problems though.

The GA-X79S-UP5 (not uD5, uP5) isn't listed on the G.Skill site. Leaving that aside, the mobo has 4 black memory slots interleaved with 4 grey slots. I placed the ram so all the sticks from one kit are in black slots and all the sticks from the second kit are in grey slots. All the sticks are recognized and the right size on boot into BIOS. This is contrary to what the manual says about channels though. However, the manual&QVL does show using the black slots first, then the grey slots, so I'm not sure how to think about channels for this board.

I tried XMP Profile 1 with no luck.

Went to expert mode and set everything manually to the same as the profile values - still no luck.

Then I went in and bumped a few values up as follows (again with no luck): tRRD=6, tWTR=7, tWL=9, tRTP=7, tCMD=2. Interestingly enough, tRC comes in at 40 under Profile 1, defaults to 33 when XMP is disabled, and only goes up to 32 if you try to set it manually. I left it as auto (33).

Then I changed to Profile 1 in case the 33 really wanted to be 40 (all the values I set maniually were retained) - no joy.

I've got Channel and Rank interleaving disabled - they seem to make no difference to the problem.

I have bumped CPUVtt and IMC from 1.050/0.880v to 1.2/1.2v across 3 steps respectively with no apparent effect.

Finally, I've tried base timings of 10-10-11-13, 10-11-11-33, 11-11-11-34 and 11-11-11-30 after reviewing the G.Skill site: nothing works with these changes either.

So your system won't POST with 8 modules, but it does with 7? You should contact Gigabyte and they should be able to provide a solution.

Running F3 bios; anything later as of last night was still beta. This setup posts just fine with 7 or 8 dimms and will boot Windows from drive or memtest from floppy. It fails memtest 4% into test 0; which doesn't instill any confidence and makes me wary of running Windows. Hence my questions.

just make sure if you change memories to other slot1, 2, 3 and 4 and go memtest again.

If memtest runs fine with 7 modules, then you can be pretty sure that your system has no issues. You can report the memtest issue, but it might be challenging to fix if the developer doesn't have access to that motherboard and 64GB of memory.

Install Windows and run the included memory diagnostics. Then run Prime95 for several hours (I let it run for 8-12 hours) and if it runs without errors, then the system should be stable. I've never relied on memtest as the ultimate tool to determine that a system is stable.

Just to provide some closure on this: I was asked on a different forum if it would run without passing memtest. So I tried it, and it's working, much to my surprise. I also found memtest86 4.20, and that actually works, though now I've got a different question for another thread. Thanks to all for the ideas.
