At stock performance levels the i3 is stronger. However the i3 is not overclockable the 955 be will overclock nicely and has the added benefit of 2 extra cores.

does the extra 2 cores even matter with the i3 having hyper-threading?
whats the fps diffrence on quad vs dual?

I would take the 2 extra cores over hyper threading for multitasking reasons. When you overclock the 955 you will have higher performance than the i3.

so the 955 is the best choice?

depends on your future upgrade plans if you have any

well if i went with the i3 i would definetly upgrade to the i5 2500k when ivy bridge comes out because i think there will be a major price drop. but if i went with the 955 i dont really see myself upgrading to bulldozer.

Yeah, for your needs, grab a Sandy Bridge i3 (matches any Phenom II in gaming) with the included stock cooler (can't overclock the non-K versions) and a high-end motherboard with future upgrades in mind (SSD, i5/i7 CPU, SLI/Xfire, 16GB RAM, USB 3.0).
